The recent mine spill on the Animas River has resulted in an increased interest in the locations of current and past mines. This map depicts current and abandoned mines from the USGS Mineral Resource Data system and the watersheds they fall within. Please note that, due to the size of the data set, approximately 3,000 sand, gravel, and stone quarries have been removed. Click on the mine's icon to learn more about that specific mine. You can download the data directly from the USGS to conduct your own analysis using GIS here. Click here for a mobile / full-screen map.

The New Mexico Environment Department is providing current information about the Gold King Mine Spill as it becomes available at https://www.env.nm.gov/riverwatersafety/.
