Drought Impacts on Heron Lake

Heron Lake was completed in 1971 to impound San Juan-Chama Project water for use down stream. As drought conditions continue to affect New Mexico, users downstream are using their allotment of water but the lake is not being replenished.

These two images show the extent to which Heron Lake levels have dropped. One image is from when the lake was relatively full (September 19, 2011 - ESRI). The other image was taken on August 3, 2014 from the LandSat 8 satellite and is a 4,3,2 pan sharpened composite.
