The New Mexico Resource Geographic System (RGIS) is the statewide clearing house for geospatial data for New Mexico. It is funded by the NM Legislature, and currently makes over 42,000 data products available for download through its web site (http://rgis.unm.edu).

RGIS is also a network for interagency and intergovernment coordination, data sharing, information transfer, and electronic communication. It supports

  • public service programs
  • policy development and implementation
  • resource and assets management; and
  • strategic planning in New Mexico

RGIS Goals

  • reduce state and local government expense by providing, through the Clearinghouse, a convenient point of transport for geographic information of all types;
  • provide web access to New Mexico’s resource geographic information and GIS data, as well as CD preparation and distribution;
  • promote the use of modern methods of analyzing, managing, and utilizing resource geographic information through special projects, technical support, and outreach;
  • maximize the value and utility of existing and new databases;
  • enable effective responses to requests for information from government, legislative, private, and non-profit entities through customized projects; and
  • facilitate coordination among state agency staff, legislators, cabinet officers, key administrators, and other public officials.
